Creative Destruction Lab - Call for Applicants (entrepreneurship program in quantum computing and machine learning)

The Creative Destruction Lab at the University of Toronto is seeking applicants for a new quantum information science and machine learning training program that will allow participants to build science-driven startups by providing technical education, pre-seed capital, quantum computing resources, and business guidance.

Applicants should be creative, intelligent, and ambitious individuals and teams with a strong background in physics, computer engineering, and/or machine learning, and a keen interest in quantum computing. Post-docs and recent graduates of master’s and PhD programs are ideal candidates if they have a firm interest in starting a company, even without any history in entrepreneurship or business. The program will also admit founders of a select group of already-existing companies at the pre-seed or seed-stage working on the frontiers of quantum computing and quantum information science.

The program is one-year in duration, begins on September 4, 2017 at the University of Toronto, Canada and is conducted in English. Up to 40 participants will be selected in three rounds of rolling admissions with deadlines on May 29, June 26, and July 24, 2017. International applicants are strongly encouraged to apply in an earlier round.

The program provides:
• Technical Education – One month of intensive technical training on quantum computing platforms and quantum-enhanced approaches to machine learning. The technical curriculum is led by Peter Wittek (, author of the first textbook on quantum machine learning.
• Expert Tutorials – Guest tutorials on frontier topics in quantum computing and machine learning delivered by experts from leading local institutions such as the Perimeter Institute, the University of Toronto, University of Waterloo, and the Vector Institute.
• Quantum Computer Access – Cloud access to the D-Wave Sampling Service through which participants can obtain samples from the D-Wave 2000Q quantum computer. This access includes hands-on troubleshooting and support from an on-site D-Wave machine learning expert. Alternative quantum computing technologies will also be explored.
• Capital – Pre-seed investment from three Silicon Valley based venture capital firms, each with a significant portfolio of machine learning oriented investments: Bloomberg Beta, Data Collective (DCVC), and Spectrum 28.
• Business Guidance – Business and technology development objective-setting meetings with the CDL Fellows, a group of highly successful entrepreneurs and investors with expertise in scaling high-tech startups.
• Business Support – Business development support from MBA students at Canada’s top-ranked business school, the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.
• Relocation Stipend - Up to $5,000 to cover relocation costs for participants applying from outside of the Greater Toronto Area.

About the Creative Destruction Lab

The Creative Destruction Lab is a seed-stage program for massively scalable, science-based ventures. The program was founded at the University of Toronto in 2012, and expanded to the University of British Columbia in 2016. It employs a unique objectives-focused coaching process to help technically-minded founders commercialize advances in science and technology through entrepreneurship. Startup founders from around the world are invited to apply, but participation requires committing to attend five bi-monthly meetings in Toronto, Canada between October and June. The program is particularly suited to early-stage companies with links to university research labs. CDL is a non-profit organization that does not take equity from admitted companies.

Notable graduates from the program’s first five years:
• Ada (conversational agents - Toronto)
• Automat (conversational agents - Montreal)
• Atomwise (drug discovery - San Francisco)
• Beagle (automated contract analysis - Waterloo)
• Blue J Legal (legal prediction - Toronto)
• Bridgit (construction software - Waterloo)
• Datalogue (data preparation - New York)
• Deep Genomics (genomic diagnosis - Toronto)
• Grobo (indoor growing - Waterloo)
• NVBots (3D printing - Boston)
• Eigen Innovations (factory automation - Fredericton)
• Fluent (embedded speech recognition - Montreal)
• Heuritech (consumer insights - Paris)
• Kepler (satellites - Toronto)
• Kyndi (natural language understanding - Palo Alto)
• Nymi (wearable security - Toronto)
• OTI Lumionics (lighting and display - Toronto)
