You are asked to show that the thermal expansion is a purely anharmonic potential related phenomenon. Seems to me that the most straightforward answer to this is to take a harmonic potential and show that there is no thermal expansion expected then. Since you showed in the class that rather general non-harmonic potential does lead to the thermal expansion, this should close the argument: harmonic potential - no expansion, anharmonic potential - there is expansion, therefore the thermal expansion depends on anharmonicity. This leaves the possibility that some anharmonic potentials won't have an expansion (symmetric ones like ar^2+br^4) but this does not change the conclusion.
